Dorian,
Well, my first advice is to read the openings articles at the Dip
Archive:
http://www.diplomacy-archive.com/resources/strategy/opening.htm
Pertinent articles are:
Generic...
"In the Beginning"
"Opening Strategy, Parts I, II, & III"
Specific to Turkey:
"Black Sea Strategy"
"An Introduction to Turkish Opening Strategy"
"The Lepanto Opening"
"Turkey - A Personal View on Opening Strategy"
"The Turkish Hedgehog"
I add the following:
Your neighbors, if they're smart, can read a map and know you'll
never be stabbed from the south or east, so they will likely do their
best to contain you before you become an unmanageable problem for
them.
[Russia can be an exception, as the two of you can grow together
profitably for some time. Though in an experienced game, people will
be on guard for a Russia-Turkey alliance (the "Juggernaut") and may
move to aggressively thwart it if they think it's coming.]
On the other hand, you're great defensive position makes it a real
chore for your neighbors to root you out. I believe the trick is for
you to defend yourself until you can become the lesser-of-two-evils.
That is, when one of your neighbors is taking a beating from another
neighbor, the former will likely be willing to accept your assistance
against the latter.
That said, an early alliance with Russia, Italy or even Austria is
not out of the question, so don't discount one if the diplomatic
situation calls for it.
