to Germany in 'teachme3':

Brent -
Introductions! An excellent idea. Your name seemed familiar from r.g.d.,
perhaps from the thread dealing with teachme. Come to think of it, as Thorf
is my witness, the first e-mail I sent to him I addressed him as "Brent,"
because I was confused by the link/e-mail address on someone else's post.
Yours, I suspect.

Well, I've been playing on and off for several years. Rare ftf games and
one or two games on-line until about six or nine months ago when I started
to play more intensively. I'm in 3 full press games, one of which is nearly
finished and one of which is starting to head downhill. In one (my first) I
am down to a four-center France clinging like a barnacle to a stalemate line
in the Med., trying to keep the German from a solo. In my second I am up to
a seven center France on the rise, grinding out the rest of the English home
sc's and Holland & hoping for a 3-way with Russia and Italy. In my third I
took over a four-center westward bound Italy and took it East, allying with
Russia & taking out Turkey and eventually Austria for a handsome collection
of little green pieces. Oh, yeah - I played in one Ancient Med. game in
which I don't think I played too badly but I was eliminated anyway. I've
also played some no-press with mixed results. I'm not in any no-press now
so I can dedicate more time to teachme3.

I'm 32 & married with one 3-year old son and a girl on the way, due in
January. More biographical details to follow, I'm sure.

Sometimes my access is better at home, sometimes at work. I'm in the
Eastern U.S. timezone.

Two pre-game thoughts I want to bounce off you right away:
1. The rule of thumb, as I've seen it on the web, is to play the players &
not the country. So anticipating we will be in some sort of two-on-one in
the West I would normally say, let's consider first, who we're dealing with,
and second, what alliance might be more natural, in that order. However we
have a different dynamic here, with each player being influenced by another
player with whom we do not correspond. So I am leaning toward reversing the
order of consideration: look at the most natural alliance first, and the
person second, considering the person we see is only one of the people we
are dealing with. I hope this makes some sense.
2. That said, I was looking at some of the material at the Strategies &
Tactics library and was tempted by all the nice stories about success with a
patient E/G against France. I have never played Germany before by e-mail (&
only rarely ftf), so I haven't any real experience to guide me here, except
to say that the Germans I have seen have been near total failures in their
efforts to reach England by outright war (as opposed to sneaking in).

So there we go. My first two thoughts of the ballgame.

I hope we win.
