to Germany in 'teachme3':
Alright, looks like I'm in. So, where to begin. Since we aren't
maintaining gunboat, I think the best place to start is getting to know each
other a little bit. Hopefully that will help me find out how I can help you
best, and help you figure out how best to use me!
My name is Brent Warner. I'm not the originator of the teachme series,
but I am its biggest proponent. I started out as a player in teachme, and
while I eventually lost the game, it taught me a lot. I went on to solo my
next game, and a few more after that. As of the last JDPR ratings, I was
number 15 on the active list. Of course, since then, I have been hit by
four consecutive losses and am struggling in another game, so maybe it was
just beginner's luck. =) I was the GM for teachme2, which allowed me to
benefit from the advice of all the coaches involved by watching them help
their players. And now, to complete the trifecta, here I am as a coach.
As you can probably tell, I'm not the most experienced player. I've only
been playing for about 5 years, which puts me way behind many of the other
people who have held this position, and the number of games I've been in is
probably even further behind. But I do come with a few advantages. First,
through my experiences with the teachme series, and several other high rated
games I've played in, I've been exposed to a good number of the e-mail
world's top players. I've tried to learn from them, and hope that I can
pass that learning on to you. Second, I know teachme better than anyone.
My experience with teachme2 gave me a lot of insight into how this format of
play works, and how it will make this game different from the standard ones.
This is something that I think previous coaches haven't had a real good
grasp of, so consider yourself lucky in that respect. =) Finally, I'm a
really dedicated Diplomacy player, especially when it comes to teachme. The
solos I have gotten I think have been in large part due more to persistance
than skill, which is an important lesson to learn. My experience with
teachme is that the players and coaches that are the best at communicating
and working together tend to be the ones that do well, and get the most out
of the experience.
So, hopefully that's enough of a pep talk and you're now certain that we
can achieve the solo here! Now, I'd like to find out a bit about you. What
is your previous experience with Diplomacy on and off the Judge? What do
you feel is your strongest and weakest points right now? What are you
hoping to get from me and this game in general? And how do you envision our
relationship working? I have some ideas on that last one myself, having
seen what has worked in the past and what hasn't, but I'd like to get your
opinion first. There are no wrong answers to any of these!
One more thing. You should feel free to send press to the other players
if you want. In a normal game, I would tell you to be writing everyone
immediately. But in this one, I also don't think its a bad idea to wait and
come up with a general game plan with me before you start talking to
everyone else. Its up to you which way you'd prefer to handle it.
OK, I lied, I have one more thing to tell you. My e-mail access is
generally best during the day, when I'm at work. I'm in the Central US time
zone, which is at GMT -6:00. If you've got urgent issues during the day,
chances are I can get back to you quickly. I also have e-mail access from
home, but because of my family and everything, most of my home e-mail is
done either early in the morning or late at night (like this). It would be
good to know what kind of schedule you're on as far as e-mail access, that
way I can try to schedule my communications to work with you!
Alright, shutting up for now, hope I didn't ramble on too much. Long live
Germany!
Brent
